Clinical Experience

Dr. James Bovan has more than 20 years of clinical experience in a multitude of settings. He completed his doctorate in clinical psychology in 2000 from the Illinois School of Professional Psychology--Chicago Campus. He is licensed as a clinical psychologist in both Illinois and Indiana; he also has credentials as a clinical addictions counselor in the state of Indiana. Earlier in his career, Dr. Bovan had experiences working at an inpatient hospital and providing psychotherapy to children in the welfare system and their foster families. He has also functioned as a visiting professor at an Indiana undergraduate college. For the past 12 years, he has provided outpatient psychotherapy through a community mental health center and was the Director of Training for their APA accredited pre-doctoral internship program. In this capacity, he supervised interns for therapy and psychological testing, as well as lectured on identity development for LGBTQ clients, individual and family play therapy, projective testing assessment, and attachment styles and their impact to personal development and mental health. Overall, he has provided treatment for a range of ages, from adolescent through geriatric clients.

Therapeutic Approach

Dr. Bovan has developed a range of approaches through his experience to treat a variety of issues, including depression and bipolar disorders, anxiety and trauma-related disorders, substance abuse (alone and with co-occurring mental health issues), as well as difficulties in adjustment to the many ways life can confound us. He approaches treatment from an Integrative Approach, which using a full range of psychological perspectives and approaches in treatment tailored specifically to each person. This approach also considers the social world around you, culture, and any biological or medical factors that may impact you. Through exploration of these varying elements, you can better find acceptance of what cannot change, the motivation for changing what is within your control, and methods for limiting any negative influences in your life. 

A Typical Session

In an accepting and supportive atmosphere, Dr. Bovan helps you reach your goals and find greater contentment through exploration of your life in therapy. This can include (but is not limited to): your thoughts, feelings, and perspectives about certain situations; how you respond to these situations;  your coping skills; and the patterns of interactions in your life. And as he gets to know you better, you can expect some suggestions and feedback to assist in the collaboration of your goals. Additionally, upon your request, he can find productive ways to include others in your life within the treatment to help you achieve your goals. 

 

Insurance

Dr. Bovan accepts insurance and can coordinate with your insurance provider to verify benefits prior to your first session for your convenience. He is currently in-network with BlueCross BlueShield, Humana/LifeSynch, and Medicare.
